Oscar Connection: Cloud 9 & Crash!

Cloud 9, the new ensemble motion picture comedy written and produced by Burt Kearns and Brett Hudson of Frozen Pictures and Academy Award winner Albert S. Ruddy, has lots in common with the ensemble drama, Crash, nominated today for the Best Picture Oscar.

Crash’s director and co-writer is Paul Haggis, who wrote Million Dollar Baby, which gave Ruddy his second Best Picture Oscar (The Godfather was the first). Ruddy signed the Million Dollar Baby deal with director Clint Eastwood on the Cloud 9 set in Pacific Palisades. (Before Eastwood came on board, Crash star Sandra Bullock was the original choice for the Hilary Swank role in Baby. She lost out because the studio wouldn’t accept her demand that Haggis to direct. Though she denied the story, her role in Crash supports it).

Ken Garito, who has a role in Crash, stars as bartender Tommy Z in Cloud 9.

Tony Danza has cameo roles in Crash and Cloud 9.





Both Crash and Cloud 9 are set in Los Angeles.

Crash tackles racism and classism.

Cloud 9 satirizes racism and classism.

Crash and Cloud 9 both have fight scenes.

Crash actor Daniel Dae Kim and Cloud 9 writer/producer Burt Kearns had kids in the same preschool class.

Both films were shot in 2004.

Cloud 9 was released by 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment on DVD January 3rd, hitting the Top 5 in premiere release rentals in its first week, but skipping domestic theatres and missing out on Oscar consideration.

Cloud 9, written and produced by Brett Hudson & Burt Kearns of Frozen Pictures and Academy Award winner Albert S. Ruddy, is making quite an impact despite low-key promotion and the shadow of big-bucks competition like Wedding Crashers and 40 Year-Old Virgin.

Retail outlets and online sellers like Amazon.com are playing catch-up, as they were blindsided by the demand for the hilarious ensemble sports comedy starring Burt Reynolds, DL Hughley, Paul Rodriguez, Angie Everhart and Gabrielle Reece.

The Fox Home Entertainment DVD is selling and renting as fast as they get them in. So if you can’t find a copy of Cloud 9 at your local store, ask for it!

Young, talented, hungry and handsome hotshot director Jared Ramsey Patrick is making a mark with this short film. And now you can watch it at home. Right now. Right here, online, featured in the Moviefone Short Film Festival.

Jared (seen here with James Earl Jones) has been a key player in the rise of Frozen Pictures, from our earliest triumphs in television documentary projects, through its landmark Showtime series My First Time, the musical documentary feature, The Seventh Python, to our move into movie success with the DVD film comedy Cloud 9.

Director, producer, cameraman, editor, writer, the Canadian expatriate has done it all. And then he went out on his own and got the financing and crew to direct his calling card and first step to features.

Laundry Night is a sexy, sleek erotic thriller.

And it’s a comedy.

The short film stars Kristin Richardson, who’s appeared in movies like Jarhead and TV series like Lost, and who happens to be married to a Backstreet Boy.

It’s been a hit in film festivals around the country. The reviewer from the Ain’t It Cool News website called the short, “stylish, comedic, quirky, well shot-- I liked it a lot, it'd be really nice to see a Jared Ramsey Patrick feature!”

Cloud 9, the first motion picture comedy from Frozen Pictures, hit DVD shelves across the United States and Canada this week--and it's flying off shelves as quickly as it's arriving!

A check of locations in and around Hollywood show that Cloud 9 sold out in its first day on sale at Best Buy, Tower Video, both Virgin Megastores, and Blockbuster!

And Amazon.com reports this morning it’s only got two copies left!

The word to distributors is: Get more copies out there, and display them prominently!

We already saw Wedding Crashers in the theatre!

Producers Burt Kearns and Brett Hudson of Frozen Pictures are looking forward to a big rental weekend for the first original comedy hit of 2006!

Kearns and Hudson wrote and produced Cloud 9 with Albert S. Ruddy, who won Best Picture Oscars for The Godfather and Million Dollar Baby. The Academy gave executive producer Gray Frederickson got his Best Picture Oscar for The Godfather, Part II.

We’ll see what voters think about this Fox Home Entertainment DVD, starring Burt Reynolds as the coach of an all-stripper beach volleyball team!

Cloud 9 DVD offers living tribute to Candy Barr!

Cloud 9, the Burt Reynolds comedy about an all-stripper beach volleyball team, hits stores today, ironically the same day the world learns of the death of legendary stripper Candy Barr.


Candy Barr, of course, was the original “porn star,” the stripper who wowed 'em in only cowboy hat and six shooters, girlfriend of Mickey Cohen, set up and sent to prison for marijuana because of her romance, and paroled in 1963 by Governor John Connally, shortly before he was shot by a magic bullet, and the alleged assassin shot by Candy’s pal, the strip club boss Jack Ruby…

In Cloud 9, written and produced by Burt Kearns and Brett Hudson of Frozen Pictures and Oscar winner Albert S. Ruddy, there’s a tribute to Candy Barr in the character of Crystal, the rootin tootin stripper who burns up the beach with her bod-blaring beach volleyball style.

So here's to Candy Barr!
